Is your attic well-ventilated? Poor attic ventilation can cause all sorts of serious problems, such as ice dams, mold and mildew, and a shortened roof lifespan. Without proper ventilation, moisture can end up significantly damaging the roofing system.
Sagging decking – Excess moisture from the attic can end up seeping into the roof decking. This moisture can then dissolve the adhesives that hold the decking together, causing the roof decking to sag and warp.
Ice dams – Ice dams form because the attic is insufficiently insulated and ventilated. An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms along a roof’s edge. It prevents melted snow from draining off the roof, causing the snowmelt to back up and damage the roof.
Shortened roof life – The excess heat and moisture buildup in the attic can damage the roof decking and shorten the lifespan of the roofing shingles and underlayment. Signs of a shortened roof lifespan include cracked shingles and premature granule loss.
Mold and mildew – The warm and humid environment in an improperly ventilated attic is the ideal environment for mildew and mold growth. Mold and mildew can damage items in your attic so you should prevent their growth as much as you can.
